Little victory, big battle…

May 15, 2008

The ruling is in – today the California Supreme Court had the integrity and the courage to do its job and say that ALL Californians are entitled to equal protection of the law!

We all know that love knows no boundary. Today, in the great state of California, neither does fairness and opportunity. This is a day that will go down in history as a victory for all Californians who cherish family and fairness, freedom and opportunity.

We’ll celebrate tonight, but tomorrow we prepare for battle, because the right wing is already poised to take this victory from us.

They have submitted what appear to be enough signatures to place a constitutional amendment on the November ballot that, if passed, would nullify today’s landmark ruling.

We need your help to preserve the right for ALL loving couples to marry in California. The Center is helping to lead the fight through our work with Equality For All, a coalition of organizations working to defeat this initiative. Please contribute to the campaign fund today.

Right wing extremists have already poured $2 million dollars into placing the constitutional amendment on the ballot. They are talking about spending $10 million more to pass it in November. (Just imagine for a moment what we could do with that $10 million, plus the additional $10 million we will raise to counter them. Feed a country? Rescue our homeless? Rebuild neighborhoods in the south still devastated by Katrina? Instead we are raising money to fight discrimination. This is so unimaginable to me in the year 2008.)

Equality For All needs your help to raise the millions needed to fight back and speak directly to the voters. Same-sex couples just won the right to marry. Don’t let the right wing take it away. Contribute now to Equality For All!

The coalition has talked to hundreds of thousands of Californians about this initiative and the harm it could cause for millions of California families. We’ve mobilized thousands of volunteers and gathered over 76,000 signatures opposing the initiative. This is just the beginning.

It’s critical we continue to build the campaign to fight this initiative. After you’ve made a contribution, please forward this message to 5 of your friends today.

Today is a joyous one for all of us. Now the fight goes on to preserve the opportunity for everyone to realize their hopes and dreams by being able to marry the person they love. We can’t let the extremists take that away.
