An experience of a lifetime…

I have much that I want to say and should say and could say, but for now, all I’ve got is one simple word: gratitude.

I am so thankful to Richard and all of his team who not only chose me to be a part of this experience, but made it such a fun one. I am thankful to have gotten to work with the cast and make so many new friendships. It is rare to make so many new friends in such a short stint of time once you reach a certain age, but this experience really was like no other. I am thankful to my body, which although is very sore today, reminded me just how strong and powerful it can be when I show it the right amount of love. My endurance is up and I feel like I am in my twenties again. I have lost over 40 pounds and it takes a lot more than stairs and Aretha Franklin’s Think to make me winded. And most of all, I am thankful for my friends. From Shannon’s flowers to all of the notes and sincere smiles I have received over the last 6 weeks congratulating me and supporting me, I’ve danced every step to make you proud. The DVD will be out in December. We shoot the infomercial tomorrow. In just a few months I will be sweating with you in your living rooms. It is unbelievable and I am grateful.

Thank you everyone for sharing this extraordinary experience with me.

I’m off to get a massage.

x

I mean, if you have to eat a salad…

…it may as well be one of the best ever…

A couple of weeks ago, my friend Sara and I headed to the Hollywood Farmer’s Market and on a whim, I picked up a crate of figs. I used to love them when I was little. My brain is warped, but I recall that it was either my friend Barron or my Aunt Carol who had a fig tree in their backyard and I would gorge on them during the warm California summer. You’d think I’d have kept them more conscious in my mind, but I can’t recall the last time I’d had one (all of my years eating Sari’s Fig Newtons doesn’t really count). Since the Farmer’s Market, that has all changed.

I have bought a carton of them every time I’ve visited a market these last few weeks and they hardly make it  a day in my kitchen. I’m almost ashamed to admit it, but I stand over the kitchen sink with a pairing knife, slicing off the end and popping them in my mouth. I seriously can not get enough! Then this morning, yes you read that right, THIS morning, I was on Jamie Oliver’s website and I saw a heading for “The Easiest Sexiest Salad In The World” (you can click on that to be taken there). Since I have been eating a lot of salads lately (thank you Miss Jenny), how could I not be interested in “the easiest” and “the sexiest”?

You can imagine my glee when I clicked on the link and immediately saw three of my favorite ingredients: prosciutto, mozzarella and FIGS! I’m going to cut to the chase here… on my way home from my chiropractor appointment, I stopped at the Meat Market of Kenneth Village in Glendale where I bought a half pound of thinly sliced (but not so thin it tears like tissue) prosciutto. Then I headed off to three different stores in search of my beloved figs! Thank you magical buyers at the always reliable Trader Joe’s! Because I wanted it to be more of a “salad” and not such an “appetizer” feeling, I added in a bag of lamb’s lettuce and tossed it all together. Also, since the fine folks of Trader Joe’s offer buratta mozzarella (my personal favorite) at such a good price (two balls for $4.99), I opted for that instead of the buffala (plus it pulls apart and tosses much easier). This is what I did and it was so delicious, I couldn’t wait to share it with EVERYONE. Jamie, I am happy to agree with you… this is one of the YUMMIEST, easiest, sexiest salads ever!*

  • About 3/4 pound of figs (washed, tips cut off and sliced in half)
  • 1 bag of lamb’s lettuce (available at Trader Joe’s (and I’m sure butter lettuce would be just as nice))
  • About 6 slices of prosciutto (which I then tore into smaller pieces)

I have this special Hawaiian finishing salt my dad and step mom had sent me, so I used that for each step, but sea salt will be just as excellent. In a large bowl, I placed the prepped figs, sprinkled with a little salt, then tore up and added the prosciutto, sprinkled with a little salt, added the lettuce, yes sprinkled a little salt (key word each time: little), then I drizzled a little lemon juice, honey, olive oil and gave it a good toss. I finished it off with (you can probably guess it) a little salt and fresh cracked pepper. I wanted to cry it was so delicious. And no, for those keeping score, this isn’t necessarily on my Jenny Craig plan, but I have 3 hours of dance rehearsals tonight and if I am going to have any extra calories, every one in this salad is worth it. Enjoy! And let me know if you try it!

*be sure and try it soon, fig season will be ending soon and they are already hard enough to find!

Our Big Brother screen shot!

2 comments August 20, 2009

Help me!

So here’s the thing: I know I’ve been a little negligent here on Planet Baub and I am feeling a little guilty about it. But, I know my little blog will always be here as our relationship ebbs and flows like the tide. I haven’t had a lot of free time lately, and the time that I have had, I have been dedicating to another blog, The Baub Show.

What’s the difference you ask? Well, The Baub Show is my weekly internet radio show. It is my dream I’ve always had finally turned into a reality. Each week it is growing bigger and bigger as my audience expands and returns week after week. This week I had Anna Faris on and some former Big Brother houseguests. During the live broadcast, I had 1600 people listening! I couldn’t believe it! The week before I had around 1200 for Lance! To give some perspective, I had about 30 people listening during my first broadcast.

Now here is a little interesting statistic about that 1600 number. I think it is safe to say about 1% of those listening are my friends and family! Which means I am hitting a really great chord with strangers and future Baubles, but I need to figure out how to reach my own peeps! The biggest hurdle I am having is letting people know that if you miss the show live, it is still available to listen as a podcast on iTunes or even directly from the player on the website (just use the pull down menu that says “Previous Shows”). I figure if I can add a few of my friends and family to my listening list, I should be able to break 2,000 listeners in no time!

What suggestions do you have for me to get the word out? What can I do to get you listening? I have just made this little digital postcard. Feel free to share it with your friends and leave me a suggestion in the comments below.

On this week’s show I have Travis Wall from So You Think You Can Dance. Excited doesn’t even begin to describe how I’m feeling, but humbled is definitely a start.

Recalibrating

Good morning Baubles!

That is the name a listener called in and declared as the new name for people who follow or listen to my stories. I like it because instead of ‘fans, peeps or followers, it represents how I’d actually prefer to think of the kind people taking the time to pay attention to my journey- precious jewels!

I know its been awhile since I’ve checked in and truth is, I’ve felt the pressure. The last few weeks have been a whirlwind of activity!

For starters, if you haven’t heard, I was in fact chosen to be one of the back up dancers in Richard Simmons new DVD Sweatin’ to the Oldies 5. I’m over the moon. If you recall, it was on my goal list just to audition. Well I pushed right through that goal and took it to the next level. Another great lesson: never stop pushing.

This has lead me to a new goal. Now this isn’t an overnight thing so don’t expect to suit up for my class tomorrow, but I am looking into becoming a certified aerobics instructor. I think it would be awesome to teach a class or two a week that motivates and inspires people, keeping me motivated and inspired at the same time. I love that life keeps presenting new views when I take the time to look beyond my current environment and survey the entire landscape.

A big item that has been on my to do list was to officiate my little sister’s wedding. I’m honored to say I can cross that one off my list. She was a beautiful bride (pics soon) and I made it through my ceremony without anyone dozing off or stumbling over my words. It truly is one of the great privileges of my life.

Also listed on my goal sheet was to relaunch The Baub Show. Well I did. And you know what? I originally did it shyly and with borderline embarrassment. But after a beautiful heart to heart with my friend Shannon I realized if I don’t have pride and confidence in my show, why should anyone else care? So I inhaled deeply and started talking about my show with pride and you know what? It’s totally taking off. Each week I’m gathering more and more listeners and the feedback has been overwhelmingly kind. This last week Melissa Peterman and Joanna Garcia from the show Reba called in as my guests and we reached almost one thousand listeners during our live broadcast! We are only in our tenth week. This week my friends Lance Bass and Wendy Thorlakson are on the show and I’m looking forward to beating my personal best!

Then there’s the support. My friend Phil has been so supportive in helping me find a new platform to host the show as well as recommending the right equipment to make it sound better. My Aunt Heidi made no hesitation when I cashed in my birthday request for said equipment. To them both I’m incredibly grateful because in spite of some technical glitches this week was the best yet! And if all that weren’t enough, people have been contacting ME about being guests on my show. Do you know how good that feels?

Counting blessings.

With all of this, there’s something I need to stay focused on; me and my health. I’m writing this post on my phone from the Starbucks near Jenny Craig. Restarting my Sunday routine I had come to enjoy, but had put on hold after moving my weigh-ins to Thursdays to accommodate my busy travel schedule of the last month.

I’ve had Jenny on pause for the last two weeks as I traveled and ran around. I didn’t lose any weight, but the great news: I didn’t gain any weight. I’ve spent the last two weeks dancing and celebrating and I didn’t over indulge. I’m at 317 and counting. It means those 30 pounds are gone and not coming back. The gloves are back on, I’m feeling re-calibrated and ready to tackle the next 30.

My friend Sara and I are heading to the farmer’s market to reap the bounty of living in beautiful California and I’m wishing everyone reading this a magnificent Sunday and a re-calibrated and wonderful week ahead!

Xoxo
Bob
